[09 Jan 2005|09:04pm] Hyena Im doing my report on the hyena. Its scientific name is crocuta. Hyenas are famously known for their laughing like call. Spotted hyenas are sometimes called laughing hyenas, because they make a noise that sounds like a laugh. A hyena laughs to signal submissiveness, usually at a kill when a dominant hyena is harassing it. Besides laughing, hyenas make many other calls. "The most famous hyena call is the whoop, a call that allows hyenas to comminucate over long distances"(Ann Engh). "Hyenas whoop for many reasons, cubs whoop to call their mothers, mothers whoop to locate their cubs, and males seem to whoop just to tell the other hyenas that they're around" (Ann Engh). Hyenas are not afraid of taking on animals much larger than themselves. Their aggressiveness and teamwork are so powerful that they can even drive away hungry lions.They have a strong, muscular neck, and muscular legs, with the front longer than the back legs . The head is fat and round with oval shaped ears and sharp,strong teeth made for chewing bones. The coat is rough, and short, and ranges in color from red to brown to tan, the color and spots fade as the hyena grows older. Spots are black and circular. A small, short mane is sometimes present on the neck and shoulder. It has at least 11 different calls. The hyena's classification is as follows, Class Mammilia,Order Carnivora,Family Hyaenidae,Genus Crocuta, and Species Crocuta. Most female hyenas tend to be larger than the males, yet males mature 3 years before the females. Females give birth about every 4 months, and usually lay about 2 pups but sometimes 1 or 4. Unlike most carnivores, hyenas are born with advanced abilities. Their eyes are open, most of their teeth are formed, and they can even drag themselves along with their front paws. Hours after birth, same-sex siblings start to fight for dominance. After about three weeks, the mother brings her pups to the clan. The clan nurtures the young, males do not care for the pups as much as the females though. The hyena's excretory system is like most mammals. Their kidneys control body fluids, wastes from the blood and excretes water. Wastes are combined to produce urine, urine goes to the urinary bladder and is then stored their. Kidneys hold water that is needed, salts and other essential nutrients.As for the hyena's digestive system, it starts with the food being eaten and then going down through the esophagus, the stomach then breaks down the food, the food is then stored temporarily, then the food goes to the large intestine. The nutrients and water are absorbed. Then the food is then passed along to the liver. The liver produces bile, which is stored in the gall bladder, the bile breaks down fats into tiny particles that allows easier digestion.Then the food is passed to the pancreas it secretes pancreatic juice which helps to break down the food even more then into the small intestine. The small intestines takes all the wastes from the food and body and remove them. The hyena's circulatory system has a 4 chambered heart it has different parts that are connected that seperates oxygenated and deoxygenated blood. The four-chambered heart is necessary to meet the high aerobic activity the hyena does.The right atrium in the heart receives oxygen poor blood then the left atrium receives the oxygen rich blood. The left and right ventricles are separated. The right ventricle pumps oxygen poor blood to the lungs, and left ventricle pumps oxygen rich blood to the body. The hyenas respiration is a process by which it takes in oxygen then releases carbon dioxide.Oxygen spreads into the blood stream within the alveoli and then into the red blood cells. As the oxygen combines with hemoglobin(pigment in red blood cells of vertebrates), it is removed from the stream, allowing a greater amount to dispertion. Oxygen is removed from capillaries in tissues. Carbon dioxide is absorbed by the blood and is connected to hemoglobin and the red cell cytoplasm. The carbon dioxide is removed from the alveoli where hemoglobin is active with oxygen. Carbon dioxide is carried in the red blood cells. Hemoglobin also transports, a regulatory gas that causes dilation of blood cells.
